The series of five sessions will enable four-member district teams, grades 5-12, to interact with experts in the field of literacy – Dr. Midge Madden and Dr. Valarie Lee as well as nationally renowned presenters with expertise in the area of reading, writing, and digital literacy.
Activities include keynote presentations, small-group discussions, team sharing, and planning time devoted to understanding the impact of Common Core Standards on teaching and learning.
Outcomes for 2015-16:
- Encourage student voice: Increasing student talk and ownership of classroom discussions has the potential to transform learning. Teachers in student-centered classrooms facilitate learning, giving students meaningful feedback on their progress.
- Increase student engagement: 21st century classrooms capitalize on technology to enhance learning and amplify to a larger audience. Interactive tasks and interesting text worthy of deep reading have the potential to help students reach the rigorous goals set forth by the Common Core.
- Move towards independence: In the move from teacher-centered to student-centered classrooms, students take on the task of learning while skillful teachers know when and where to scaffold learning.
- Transform knowledge production: Students learn to produce knowledge through the reading of text and amplify or share their knowledge with a larger audience.
