The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), founded in 1921, is a professional organization serving elementary and middle school principals and other education leaders throughout the United States, Canada, and overseas. NAESP supports elementary and middle-level principals as the primary catalyst for creating a lasting foundation for learning, driving school and student performance, and shaping the long-term impact of school improvement efforts.

States and local school districts are implementing a wide range of new early childhood assessments, including new assessments of PreK-3rd Grade classroom quality; kindergarten entry assessments; and assessments to support teacher evaluation, Grade Level Reading and Common Core State Standards initiatives. These efforts are providing a wealth of new information on young children and on the quality of early childhood teaching and learning. They have the potential to inform the design of equitable learning targets and environments that address the strengths and needs of every student in every community. Effective principals recognize the value of this information and at the same time understand the important role they must play in providing leadership and support for using information from assessments to improve teaching and learning opportunities and outcomes for all young children.
This session will address current efforts and challenges related to using assessments to effectively inform instruction and meet the developmental needs and characteristics of young P-3 learners. Panelists will provide an overview of what’s emerging across states as well as look deeply at what it takes on the ground for principals to use assessments to improve teaching and learning in their buildings. Table Talks will enable participants to exchange ideas and share their own experiences during the session.
