Should You Be a Math Major? Pros & Cons - By Lumos Learning
00:0-1 | trying to channel nerd vibes with my glasses , but
00:02 | still be cool . I'm just not gonna use these
00:05 | all the season for the thumbnail . Hello . So
00:07 | this week , I wanted to go over the pros
00:09 | and cons of being a math major . I tried
00:11 | to think of an even list of both pros and
00:13 | cons , but I thought of twice as many pros
00:15 | than Collins . Maybe I'm biased because I am setting
00:18 | that I'm going to go through the pros first one
00:22 | . The most important reason for me was that it
00:24 | was very interesting to me . I always really liked
00:25 | it in high school , and so I wanted to
00:27 | keep doing it . Um , I liked solving problems
00:30 | . I still do . I find math super engaging
00:33 | , especially in comparison to other subjects like history ,
00:36 | where there's a lot of reading required with math ,
00:39 | you also have to read a lot . But then
00:40 | there's a huge component that involves doing things that is
00:43 | very active , and I know in other classes like
00:46 | history , the active part would be writing essays ,
00:49 | and for me , I did enjoy that , but
00:51 | it was so subjective that after a while it became
00:54 | really frustrating for me because I would get English teachers
00:57 | and history teachers who would have different comments about my
00:59 | essays . And so , with math , there's a
01:01 | right answer . There's a wrong answer . And so
01:02 | I guess that's too . It's interesting , and there's
01:05 | a right and wrong answer . The third reason .
01:06 | Because there are a lot of career options , especially
01:09 | within finance . A lot of math majors going to
01:11 | investment banking , corporate banking , commercial banking , insurance
01:14 | , private equity teaching Consulting is also a big one
01:17 | . Those are the main math related fields , but
01:20 | there are also plenty of fields that math majors going
01:23 | to that are very unrelated to math . So I
01:25 | like that math opened a lot of doors for me
01:27 | , career wise . Fourth reason is that math is
01:30 | very collaborative , especially in college , especially at Northwestern
01:33 | . In all my math classes , I've been assigned
01:35 | weekly problems . That's where we're encouraged to work in
01:37 | groups on problems , which is really fun for me
01:40 | . I like seeing how other people think . One
01:42 | of the coolest things about math is that there's generally
01:44 | just one correct answer . But there are so many
01:47 | different ways to get to the correct answer . And
01:48 | so I love seeing how my classmates come up with
01:50 | solutions . I think we're on five . Maybe math
01:55 | can be more applicable than a lot of majors ,
01:57 | especially if you're studying applied math , which I recommend
01:59 | over pure math . Six . You develop critical thinking
02:02 | skills . This is something that every math department boasts
02:06 | about . I agree that you will develop critical thinking
02:09 | skills , but I don't think that math is the
02:11 | only major that will teach you those skills . I
02:13 | think most majors will teach you how to think critically
02:15 | . So I put this one on the pros list
02:18 | but would also go on the pros list for virtually
02:21 | any other major . Studying math in college teaches you
02:24 | to be very patient . I personally think math professors
02:27 | are the coolest professors , so if you are a
02:30 | math major , then you get to work with math
02:31 | professors all the time . The last reason is kind
02:34 | of a dumb reason , but there are a lot
02:36 | of positive stereotypes . For example , people assume you're
02:39 | smarter . I would say that that is a common
02:42 | stereotype that can work in your favor , and along
02:45 | with that , I think people tend to take you
02:47 | more seriously on certain subjects . Cons . the first
02:51 | con is that being a math major at college is
02:53 | very hard for me . This was actually a pro
02:56 | . I wanted to be challenged . I like being
02:58 | challenged . I get bored pretty easily , and so
03:01 | I try to take challenging classes . Although I think
03:03 | for a lot of people , this would be on
03:05 | the cons list . So I'm just gonna keep it
03:06 | on the cons list because your classes are harder ,
03:09 | your GPS probably going to be lower than it would
03:11 | be if you were studying something else . This ,
03:13 | of course , isn't true for everyone , because there
03:15 | are always those geniuses in your math classes that will
03:17 | get is no matter what . Another con is that
03:19 | you will graduate , lacking writing skills and communication skills
03:23 | unless you go out of your way to take extra
03:25 | writing classes or public speaking classes . So the last
03:28 | con is the negative stereotypes that come with being a
03:30 | math major . When you tell people that you are
03:33 | a math major , a lot of times they assume
03:35 | that you're socially awkward , which is very true for
03:37 | me , um , and that you're that communicating and
03:41 | bad at writing , and sometimes those are true .
03:44 | They're all true for me . So these are the
03:47 | pros and cons of being a math major |
DESCRIPTION:
The pros and cons apply to all math majors, and are important to consider if you are thinking about studying math in college.
OVERVIEW:
Should You Be a Math Major? Pros & Cons is a free educational video by Lumos Learning. It helps students in grades 8 practice the following standards 8.SP.1,8.SP.2,8.SP.3.
This page not only allows students and teachers view Should You Be a Math Major? Pros & Cons but also find engaging Sample Questions, Apps, Pins, Worksheets, Books related to the following topics.
1. 8.SP.1 : Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association..
2. 8.SP.2 : Know that straight lines are widely used to model relationships between two quantitative variables. For scatter plots that suggest a linear association, informally fit a straight line, and informally assess the model fit by judging the closeness of the data points to the line..
3. 8.SP.3 : Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems in the context of bivariate measurement data, interpreting the slope and intercept. For example, in a linear model for a biology experiment, interpret a slope of 1.5 cm/hr as meaning that an additional hour of sunlight each day is associated with an additional 1.5 cm in mature plant height..
